Jerusalem - No Place Like It


For  those who have been there and for those who have not , it is a place like no other on earth. Countries and peoples have been fighting for this most incredible of places for about 3,000 years and for good reason. Jewish tradition tells us that ten measures of beauty have been given to the world whereas Jerusalem has taken 9 of those measures.

From the incredible views of Mount Scopus to the sunsets in Old city there are more breathtaking scenes that can be described. The diversity of the inhabitants and the fervor of belief transform this city to a different sphere than any other. To breath its air and walk its streets is to understand its very special status. More wars were fought for this city than any other with the latest coming in 1967 when Israel recaptured the old city of Jerusalem from the Jordanians. Most countries in the world including the United States do not except Israel’s sovereignty on the city. This non recognition even has its ramifications in birth certificates that are given to children of US citizens who happen to live in Jerusalem. The certificate will say Jerusalem but will not say Israel. This bizarreness was even challenged in a United States Court case and found to be legal.

Because of the up and down status of the city some sections have Jerusalem hotels that are completely empty. They are too close to disputed areas and belligerent groups. All the different strange things about the status of the city cannot really change the essence of what Jerusalem is about. It is about being a city of peace which is supposed to bring all peoples together to worship and transcend all other difficulties.

That essence is there you just need to close your eyes and breathe it in.
