Thinking of coming for Passover to Israel? If you don’t live in Israel and you want to come here for Pesach then get ready to shell out very big bucks. It has all gotten to be a bit much, as the cheapest airfare range is in the $2,000 area. And that of course is just to get here. The hotel rooms start at $250 and go to over $500 for five star hotels. That’s comes with breakfast! Veteran travellers have learned to ‘take away’ lunch from breakfast and even come prepared with zip lock baggies and duffle bags to horde the food. Well at $250 at night, who can blame them.
For the privilege of staying the entire Passover at the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem, visitors will pay $5650 for the best room and about a thousand dollars less for less spacious room (read smaller than most of the rooms in your house, if you can afford that kind of money). So if you have flown to Israel and plan on staying in a Jerusalem hotel you may just spend $13,000 just for travel and a roof over your head. If you would like to eat something in the evening or partake in the traditional Seder that meal alone will cost you another $125 for each participant. So for a family of 5 you will be paying about $2,000 for other meals during the holiday week. Grand total for a family of five: $25,000.
And then there are the other expenses. Wait, we haven’t even gotten started. You can’t expect to come to Israel and not tour. So a one day private tour of Jerusalem can run you about $1,000. A trip to mini-Israel $125. A trip to the zoo: $50 (without ice-cream). Israel Museum: another $50. Private tour to the Dead Sea with entrance to a spa: $500. Beginning to get the picture? And of course you can’t come to Israel with buying some great Israeli sandals, hats, army shirts and a host of other wonderful tourist items that you will wonder why you bought them when you return home.
All in all, it’s probably just easier and cheaper to live here and spend the holidays in one of the hundreds of lovely communities in Israel!
